General Gideon von LOUDON [ Notable personality ČR ]
In his youth he joined the Russian army (1742), in 1744 he entered into the service of Maria Theresa. He distinguished himself in a number of battles in the ranks from a captain to a field marshal. In 1789 he gained his greatest victory - by the liberation of Belgrade. In 1790 he was appointed the commander in chief of all Austrian armed forces. He came to Nový Jičín to manage his units from here in case of war. He fell gravely ill here and died on 14 July 1790. A memorial plaque and a bust of this commander were unveiled on the house where he died to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his death.
